How to Be Seen as a Leader in Meetings - The Muse

How to Be Seen as a Leader in Meetings - The MuseHow to Be Seen as a Leader in MeetingsMost people accept that meetings are a part of work- but that doesnt mean they enjoy them. As this infographic shows, managers spend between 35-50% of their time in meetings, and up to four hours a week just on position updates. And those same bosses consider 67% of meetings to be failures.Try as you might to escape them, theyre also incredibly important to your career. Meetings are a professional stage- its where others see your leadership ability. How you get your point across, handle difficult questions, and facilitate a discussion speak volumes about your capacity. People use this time to assess and judge others. Even if you sit quietly and listen, youre sending a message. Regardless of the reasons why they struggle with meetings, savvy professionals know they have to find a way to use them to gain and expand their credibility. Instead of trying to duck out or hang back, here are five ways to m ake the most of every meeting youre in. 1. Get Your Voice in the Room EarlyMeeting dynamics are established early on by the most vocal speakers. So, aim to speak up in the first five minutes to show confidence and establish your voice. Not only do you benefit from getting your ideas out there while everyone is still fresh and paying attention, your comments are also more likely to be referred to later, providing you with other openings to be heard. 2. Build on Others ThoughtsDialogue in meetings can go fast, with ideas being thrown out quickly. If other people take the points you wanted to say, you may feel that you need to wait for a truly original, creative thought to speak up. But thats a high bar and can keep you on the sidelines (maybe for the entire meeting). Instead, notice what others are saying and look for common threads that can take the conversation forward. It can be as simple as saying, Ive heard three people mention product modifications, what could that look like? or If we take a step back, the only point were getting deckenfries on is the timeline. This can also be a helpful way to keep people from talking over each other and encourage them to find areas of agreement. 3. Ask Powerful QuestionsOne common criticism of meetings is that they have too much talking and not enough listening. When people are overly focused on getting out a barrage of ideas, you can set yourself apart by encouraging the group to listen to one another. This is a role rarely played, but needed and appreciated- it shows confidence to make everyone pause and reflect. One simple way to do this is to ask powerful questions. These are how and what questions rather than why ones. Because they dont put people on the defensive or delve into fact finding, they encourage people to open up and think expansively. For example, you may askWhats the most important aspect of this decision? How will we measure the success of this? Whats different about this suggestion than what weve trie d before? What are the themes you see emerging?4. Be Prepared (But Stay Flexible)If you prepare for meetings, you instantly come in from a position of strength. That could mean reading through the agenda, doing advance research, or coming up with ideas beforehand. Most of us know that if we want to build credibility, having our thoughts together ahead of time will help us to show up with confidence. However, we also have to factor in the variability of meetings. For all of our preparation, its actually more likely that things wont go exactly as planned with so many people and factors involved (running out of time, technology not working, key players not showing up). So, you should both prepare for the meeting and prepare to be flexible. For example, if you have 15 minutes scheduled to present, prepare both a full and condensed presentation in case your time gets squeezed. If you do background research on the meeting topic, also research tangential topics that may arise. If the topic you want to address gets thrown under the table, ask if you can reach out separately to attendees to discuss further. Being prepared displays your strategic thinking, and flexibility shows that youre quick on your feet- both key attributes of a great leader. 5. Emphasize Next StepsIn my coaching work, by far the biggest complaint I hear about meetings is that nothing happens from them. Sure, everyone knows they should end with responsibilities being handed out, but few actually do. Because we want our meeting time to actually be useful, its helpful when someone takes the initiative to ask for next steps and assignments before ending it. If youre running the meeting, this is simple to do. If youre just a participant, it can feel more difficult. Dont let that stop you. It shows leadership to state, Im not clear on what the next steps are for each of us it would be helpful to clarify before we schliff up. You can even offer to track next steps for the group, if appropriate, which give s you an additional speaking opportunity for the next meeting. While you may never look forward to an upcoming meeting, by using them as an opportunity to come across more as a leader, theyll start to feel more valuable (and more productive).

Want to land your dream job fast Think like a business owner.

Want to land your dream job fast Think like a geschftsleben owner.Want to land your dream job fast Think like a business owner.Impress your interviewer by getting to the heart of the business needs. As a Career Coach, Ive helped tons of people navigate through job search and they all have one goal in common Get the perfect job as quickly and painlessly as possible. One way to do this is to own your job search and accomplishments fully, and to understand how you impact a company and its bottom line. In other words, think of yourself and your job search as a business owner might. Thinking like a business owner can significantly accelerate your success no matter if youre unemployed, misemployed or looking to make a move into a better opportunity. So, how can you think like a business owner even if youre not one and dont ever plan to be?1. Look at the hiring decision from their perspective Business owners expect a return on their investment. A company will invest $50K, $100K, or even more i n you in the form of annual compensation. Not surprisingly, they expect to get a return on that investment. You expect regular paychecks, challenge, opportunity they expect you to be productive and help them make money.Put yourself in the owners shoes if you owned the business what would be important to you? Shift your thinking from WIIFM (whats in it for me) to WIIFT (whats in it for them). When creating resumes and practicing interview answers, showcase the talents and skills you have that would most benefit the business.2. Know how you impact the bottom lineBusiness owners are always focused on the bottom line. What results or outcomes will the company experience because you work there? Employers dont care about the tasks you perform as much as what happens as a result of you performing them. Youre either saving the company money or helping them make more of it. Its important for you to be clear about your contribution. Highlight these results during interviews or even one-on-o nes with your manager.A few ideas on how you may have contributed to the bottom lineSolved a pressing problemImproved operational efficiencyEliminated bottlenecksIncreased sales or cut costsEnhanced customer loyaltyOpened new marketsConcepted new products that make the company more competitive3. Own your accomplishmentsBe proud of the work youve done and tell your story effectively. No one else would have tackled that project or saved the company money the same way you did. Youre the hero of the story and you saved the day. Own it and let the right people know about the impact you made. If you dont promote yourself, no one else will.Develop 5-10 stories about your accomplishments the problem at hand, actions you took to solve it and the results you achieved. Tip Keep a file of stories and add to it every time you have an accomplishment while its fresh in your mind. That way, next time youre in a job transition you wont have to abflug over.4. Treat their business like its your ownB usiness owners will invest their time, money, heart and soul into their company. Show an employer that you understand their business needs, and that your investment into the company will lead to mutual gains. Prove that youll be a good steward of whats most important to them. If you do this, youll stand head and shoulders above everyone else who is interviewing for the same position, but who are more focused on themselves rather than the business needs.Youll land the job fast, and youll make an impression that garners you favor when theres a promotion opportunity.

Defining Mental Health Disabilities under the ADAAA

Defining Mental Health Disabilities under the ADAAADefining Mental Health Disabilities under the ADAAADefining Mental Health Disabilities under the ADAAA Berkowitz, Esq.Imagine that one of your employees suddenly starts missing deadlines or making mistakes at work. She is coming in late without explanation a couple of times per month and you overhear her telling a co-worker that she is really stressed right now.You may recall that the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act(ADAAA) expanded the definition of disability to include more types of impairments under the laws coverage, but you are leid sure how that applies to mental health issues. What do you do?In the three years since the ADAAA became effective, the number of employees who have filed complaints of disability discrimination with the EEOC has risen by nearly 20%. Managing mental health issues can be particularly tricky because symptoms are hard to identify and employees are often reluctant to talk about their problem s.Now that the long-awaited EEOC regulationsinterpreting the ADAAA are final, business-owners know that they have to address those workers who are stressed out, depressed, anxious or even threatening to the workplace. But how exactly? The first thing to keep in mind is that an employers responsibilities under the ADAAA are the saatkorn whether you are discussing employees physical impairments or mental impairments. If you determine that an employee is disabled for any reason, your next step will always be to consider whether that employee can perform their job with or without a reasonable accommodation. When making these determinations for mental health disabilities, keep these issues in mind (and many apply tophysical impairments as well)The ADAAA now lists a number of mental health conditions that are almost always considered covered disabilities, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder or schizophrenia. An e mployee with such conditions is going to be protected by the ADAAA without you having to consider the nature of the condition.A health condition does not have to be permanent to be a disability, so an employee with episodic depression could be entitled to an accommodation. It does not violate the ADAAA to question an employee whose work is slipping even if you suspect that he or she suffers from a mental disability.Be careful not to take an employment action because you regardan employee as having a disability. That is, do not make an assumption that an employees behavior is the result of a mental health condition.Possible accommodations must be reasonable for the business. Time off work, telecommuting, changed or lessened responsibilities or a reduced schedule may or may not be reasonable accommodations for a mentally ill employee, depending on your businesss specific situation and the employees needs.Take a look at the EEOCs small business guidelinesfor the ADAAA to get more inform ation specific to smaller organizations.Employees that are currently using illegal drugs or abusing alcohol are not protected by the ADAAA and may be subject to discipline. An employee who is a recovering addict or in a treatment program is entitled to protection. So what should you do about your stressed-out employee?Talk to her privately, focusing objectively on her work deficiencies and what she needs to do to bring her performance back up to an acceptable level.Be prepared to discuss reasonable accommodations if her answers point to her having a mental health-related disability. If she assures you that she is fine and denies that there is anything wrong, continue to monitor her employee performance just as you would for any employee whose work has been less than stellar.Read more Employment Law Small Business Updates

This PR job requires you to babysit the CEOs kids

This PR job requires you to babysit the CEOs kidsThis PR job requires you to babysit the CEOs kidsIf you want to join this firms public relations team as an account coordinator, youll need to be ready to babysit the CEOs kids. The Berman Group,a majormarketing and communication agency based in New York City, recently posted a Craigslist job listing titled, PR Account Coordinator w/ Afternoon Childcare. But this headline doesnt mean that youll get to have a public relations job with childcare for your own kids on-site. Instead, youll be the one expected to take up childcare duties in addition to managing accounts. The listing states that it wants a PR professional with 1-3 years of experience in public relations to manage accounts and support PR strategy and execution for clients. So far, so good. But heres the catch We also may need this person to watch the CEOs sic children a few hours in their afternoon, should the current person be unavailable. So in addition to writing, editing, and p itching press releases, managing social media schedules and posts, coordinating with clients, and maintaining a database of editors and publications, this candidate needs to be ready to be an afternoon nanny to their anfhrers children. If you write a cover letter for this role, are you expected to talk about how well you work with kids in addition to how youve executed so-and-so account? Why cant the CEO hire their own personal afternoon babysitter?Ladders reached out toThe Berman Group to ask those questions. A woman who answered the phone at the main number declined to give her name and said the company declined to comment. Its unclear how taking on an additional childcare role will help this candidate succeed in public relations. Even if youre not babysitting as you complete reports, there are other ways employees, particularly female ones, get trapped into doing administrative tasks that do not benefit their careers.Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and organizational psychology profes sor Adam Grant call this trap arbeitszimmer housework, where female employees do administrative tasks that help but dont pay off. They outlined how women are expected to regularly do communal, nurturing tasks like mentor employees, take notes, and plan that office party. Citing 183 different studies, they found that when women are expected to take care of others in their careers, they rarely have time for themselves, and they have higher rates of burnout. Female employees who dare to deviate from the path of taking personal responsibility for refilling the office candy dish are seen as selfish and are rated less favorably. So if youre a job seeker who is thinking about taking this babysitting-PR job, be careful to monitor your time and emotional bandwidth as you juggle nanny duties with clients.

We recommend Zurich in particular for a visit to its  Widder Hotel, where Aries will find tributes everywhere to their own kind, as “widder” translates in English to ram. (We’re especially fond of the sculpted topiaries.) Plus,  Widder Garage  and  Widder Bar Kitchen  become quite the scene at sundown, so you won’t n eed to travel far to sample the local nightlife.TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)Shenandoah Valley, VA and WV:  Practical, grounded, and pretty laid-back (unless someone messes with them), this zodiac sign tends to be overlooked and underrated, just like this region of the Virginias. We know all about New Orleans and Charleston, but the Shenandoah Valley is the perfect destination for a Taurus - and not just because bulls roam free on the area’s many ranches. Tauruses have an eye for beauty (and gardening), which means they’ll appreciate the Blue Ridge Mountains and the charming historic inns in the region (including the  Blackburn Inn). Since they’re good with their finances, they’ll also appreciate not having to book an international flight.GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)Quintana Roo, Mexico:  The Geminis are the twins of the zodiac, and they require a trip that’s just as dual-sided. Nowhere is there a more pronounced juxtaposition of vacation vibes than in Quintana Roo, home to Tulum, Cancun, and Playa del Carmen. Head to Cancun to party like it’s spring break and you just turned 21, indulge in your inner hippie on the beach in Tulum, or visit Playa del Carmen for a mixture of both. The ultimate Gemini itinerary? A stay at  Panama Jack Resort in Cancun  paired with a day trip to  Chichen Itza  via  Cancun Passion. History and heritage by day, cocktails and Caribbean by night: Who says you can’t have it both ways?CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)Kauai, HI:  Cancer crabs are known to retreat into their hard shells at the smallest slight, so there’s no better place to take the edge off than the wondrous island of Kauai. The most secretly emotional of creatures will find salvation in the spirituality of the island, where double rainbows and breaching humpback whales are enough to make any traveler believe there is a higher force (one that supposedly has a reason for your last terrible breakup). These water signs are also known to hold a grudge for centuries, so they’l l fit right in on the Kauai coast, where the gods are said to exact punishment on any trespasser who dares to remove a rock or a shell from the sacred island. Stay at the  Aqua Kauai Beach Resort  to indulge in shaved ice and mai tais while watching the sunset.LEO (JULY 23-AUGUST 22)Serengeti, Kenya:  As the lion king (or kween) of the zodiac, there’s no better place for our Leo travelers than among their own kind in the Serengeti. Embarking on a safari in southwest Kenya is guaranteed to get you your most Instagram likes ever - because what self-respecting Leo doesn’t love attention? Plus,  Kenya Airways  is launching its first-ever direct flight from New York City to Nairobi later this month, so the timing has never been better for this fire sign to bless the rains.VIRGO (AUGUST 23-SEPTEMBER 22)US Virgin Islands:  What destination is flawless enough for the sign of Beyoncé, aside from a villa in the US Virgin Islands? As an earth sign, Virgos will appreciate the mountainous greenery of St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas.  Rent a villa with friends, or take a solo trip as an independent woman to a place on earth that’s just as perfect as you are. Seriously, the sunrises are unreal, making it the ideal place to reconnect with your immortal maiden self.LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22)Vienna, Austria:  Libras require the excitement of a city, not the mellowness of the countryside, to satisfy their party animal needs. So it’s only fitting that this beauty-conscious air sign should spend their season in one of the most beautiful cities in the world: Vienna. From the endless balls held every year to the legendary café culture, there’s no shortage of social activities to appease the zodiac’s queen of small talk. Plus, for a Libra, not getting enough Instagram likes is a fate (almost) worse than death, and the  #AccidentallyWesAnderson  palaces provide the perfect backdrop to their well-edited selfies.SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21)Belize:  It’s no longer a secret that Scorpios are in their feelings 24/7. The depth of their emotions is probably rivaled only by the  Great Blue Hole  of Belize, a natural phenomenon that, much like Scorpios themselves, is unexpected but spectacular. Not only is Belize home to many kinds of (venomous) scorpions, it’s less overexposed than other tropical getaways. The Instagram geotags will lend the entire trip the kind of mystery and intrigue that most Scorpios can only dream about when stuck at their desk (and stalking their exes via finsta accounts, of course).SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21)Reno, NV:  This fun-loving fire sign is the most excitable traveler in the zodiac, always popping up where they’re least expected. The zodiac’s archer lives life like it’s a festival all year round, which is why Reno is perfect for these impulsive travelers. They can relish the Burning Man art and street murals before exploring the  Nevada Museum of Art  (and observing their fellow archers depic ted in the  Art of the Greater West exhibit  on display through January 2020). If the spirit moves them, they might decide to risk their travel entertainment budget on the slot machines at the  Grand Sierra Resort. And, to quote fellow free spirit Jerry Garcia, maybe the next morning they’ll set out from Reno and be trailed by 20 hounds.CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 19)Pontresina, Switzerland:  Capricorns tend to get a lot of shade from astrologers. We’re no fun; we work too hard; we need to learn to just relax. (Full disclosure: I myself am a Capricorn.) But there’s more to this earth sign than just deadlines, and Capricorns should travel to Switzerland’s Engadin Valley to finally feel appreciated for our strengths. It’s not coincidental that our sign is the goat (as in Greatest Of All Time), which is  the symbol of this region, and in these mountains, Capricorns can hike, bike, and ski to our hearts’ content. If you’re feeling flush, we recommend staying in the  Gra nd Hotel Kronenhof. Capricorns work tirelessly for that hard-earned money, so why not spend it in style?AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20-FEBRUARY 18)Pacific Northwest:  Where else should the water-bearer of the zodiac vacation than the Pacific Northwest? Washington state, in particular,  is well-suited for the Aquarius who craves alone time as much as they crave the variety that can be found in the vineyards, boating, art galleries, and restaurants around  Seattle. If the city itself is a bit too expected for the water sign that walks to the beat of their own drum, we recommend crossing Lake Washington to book a stay at the  W Bellevue. Revel in the gorgeous cabin-chic decor that you were first among your friends to discover, and prepare to take moody selfies at dusk on the waterfront - trust us, the whole trip will be extremely on-brand.PISCES (FEBRUARY 19-MARCH 20)Lake Tahoe, CA NV:  The most emotional of water signs, sensitive Pisces are apt to get their feelings hurt. Which is why Lake Ta hoe is perfect for these serenity-loving fish - it’s one of the most picturesque destinations on the planet, and there’s simply no better place to swim in your bottomless sea of emotions (the deepest part of the lake is  1,645 feet). There are no terrifying saltwater predators like sharks to get nervous about, and the lake is 22 miles wide, so there’s more than enough space for you to be alone and mellow out from your usually anxious thoughts.Final note:  If you’re not happy with your recommendation, be sure to check out your rising sign as well! Susan Miller  did  recommend  reading both. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

10 smartphone habits that are getting in the way of your success

10 smartphone habits that are getting in the way of your success 10 smartphone habits that are getting in the way of your success Being on your phone at work, once the sign of a bad employee, is now the norm.Text messages are “making deep inroads” in workplaces across America, says  Wall Street Journal reporter Te-Ping Chen. Yet messaging your boss can lead to accidental texts like “Love you” or “pumpkinbear.”“While email helps silo work communications, the text inbox is a more blended affair, where notes from friends and family jostle with communiqués from bosses and co-workers,” Chen writes.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Besides awkward text exchanges, there are other miscues many employees can make as smartphones become more commonplace at work. For instance, overusing your phone or constantly getting bombarded with notifications can lead to decreased productivity.“Productivity is often at its apex during a flow state,” when a person is fully immersed in an activity, NYC-based psychotherapist  Jordana Jacobs  told Business Insider.According to Jacobs, while phones are great for the technology they provide, they also feed into our natural distracted state. Cell phones take us out of the flow state, “which is so fundamental to productivity,” she said. “Essentially, we are consistently interrupting our own thought process,” she said. To put it simply, our phones “take us away from ‘the now,'” she added. It’s probably not plausible for you to get rid of your phone at work completely, but you can still take steps to keep it from getting in the way of your goals. The first step to being more productive is identifying all the ways our phones keep us from staying focused. Jacobs and  Jonathan Alpert, psychotherapist and author of “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days,” broke down the phone habits that are ruining our productivity:This article was originally written by Audrey Noble.Mindlessly checking emails on your phone can easily take you out of the flow state that productivity requiresAccording to Jacobs, smartphones take us out of being in the present. When we’re constantly checking those work and personal emails, she said it puts us in the mindset of, “I’m doing this rather than just being where I am now.”Constantly taking out your smartphone to take a photo can keep you from being in the momentOne of the perks of today’s smartphones is that they double as high-quality cameras. While it’s great to want to take a picture here and there to have a keepsake of a particular moment, Jacobs said that playing paparazzi in our own lives is another way of taking us from living in the now.Checking social media on a smartphone makes us obsessed with what everyone else is doing at the expense of the actual task in front of usSocial media can feed our obsession with other people’s lives, but Jacobs said it’s also a platform for us to brag to our followers about what we are doing or have done.Texting others can k eep you from conversing with the people around youJacobs said that texting and messaging other people can have you more focused on what those people are currently doing, causing a distraction from anything productive that you should be achieving.Having your phone out all the time keeps you from taking a moment to be alone and reflect on what you need to get doneJacobs said she believes that we have lost the capacity to be alone.“We now think of the phone as our primary attachment figure; all of the people we know and love live in the phone, that’s how we talk to them,” she said. “We never actually have space by ourselves to contemplate, reflect, or gain insight into the self, in the way we used to be able to.”Knowing and growing ourselves can be the most productive work we do, and our phones often get in the way of this.Productivity apps can help you stay focused and complete your tasks, but they can also hurt your effortsWhile Alpert does think that there are some product ivity apps that can be helpful, he said he believes that relying solely on them or downloading the wrong one can actually do the opposite. According to him, the best way to stay productive is to have the right mindset.“How someone thinks can significantly impact their behaviors, drive, and ultimately their output,” he said. “People should feel encouraged that developing a go-getter mindset is possible.”Getting caught up with notifications on your screen can be distractingAlpert said many people do, and these notifications - whether it’s a text message or news alert - can distract you from finishing whatever work you have started. He suggested shutting off social media notifications completely. “These merely serve as a distraction and probably don’t contain anything urgent,” he said.Opening one app can lead to opening another, then another, then another…With apps, the internet, and other features of smartphones, you can easily find yourself going down a deep rabbi t hole of distraction.“Rarely do people go online or on their phones and stick to the intended reason for checking their phones,” he said. “If they’re checking the weather, that might then lead to checking email, messages, or reading a news story - all this serves as a gross distraction and impacts productivity.”The blue light emitted by your phone screen may affect your sleep quality.According to Alpert, the  blue light  that is emitted from devices can affect our sleep patterns.“Blue light is thought to enter the brain through the eyes and impact the pineal gland. This gland plays a role in melatonin production, the hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles,” he said. “So devices used close to bed could impact someone’s ability to get proper rest.”This will have a profound effect on mood, energy levels, and ability to focus and complete tasks, he said.Since we can look up anything instantly, we may be losing our ability to wonderThis one may not be exp ressly related to productivity, but it is still concerning.Jacobs said we have lost our ability to wonder because we can pretty much look up whatever we need to - the answers to every burning question we may have are always right at our fingertips. “I think this truncates the creativity process and stunts our imaginations,” she said. This article first appeared on Business Insider.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

10 Tips for Choosing the Best Job for You

10 Tips for Choosing the Best Job for You 10 Tips for Choosing the Best Job for You Its always exciting when you have  job options to choose from, even though it can be stressful to decide which position to accept. As the job market shifts to a candidate-driven atmosphere, you could find yourself in a position to be selective about your next job. Job seekers who are in high-demand fields and employees who have a strong track record of career success are often in the enviable position of being able to choose their next job from multiple opportunities. If you have the right  skill set  and experience, you can afford to be picky. You will be able to leverage your advantage to land a job thats closest to your ideal position. You’ll also be able to choose a job which is the best fit for your personal circumstances and career goals. You don’t have to take the first  job offer  you get, unless youre sure its the perfect position for the next stage of your career. Rather, take your time and make sure your next job is exactly what you’re looking for. Heres how to optimize your chances of choosing the best possible job when you have the upper hand. 10 Tips for Choosing a Job in a Job Seeker's Market 1.  Stay in job search mode.  Keep yourself in continuous  job search  mode so youre ready for opportunities as they arise. Keep all your job search documents up to date, especially your  LinkedIn profile. Document your successes in your current job on at least a monthly basis and incorporate them into your resume. If your skills are in high demand, employers will often come after you, so be ready to respond to appealing options. 2. Create a profile of your ideal job and employer.  This will help you to identify attractive positions and pass on other jobs that you dont think would be a good fit. Consider  what type of employer would be perfect for your personality and work style. To do this, think about the elements of your current and past jobs that you have enjoyed the most and write them down.   Ask yourself:  Which activities are most satisfying about your current job? What might you like to avoid in your next job? What do you want in terms of work-life balance? What is your  ideal company culture? Which  jobs would be most satisfying for you to work at? 3. What else would you like in a job?  You should also consider what might be missing from your current job. For example, if you enjoy planning events, are you doing enough event planning in your current role?  Perhaps your current job offers insufficient opportunities for advancement, or your boss is too autocratic and you’d like more freedom to make decisions and plan your workflow. 4.  Consider your perfect job.  Take some online  career assessments  to help you to identify other values, interests, or personality traits that you might want to tap in your ideal job. You might also want to enlist the help of a  career counselor  if you are struggling to identify key aspects of your ideal career. If you have a dream company youd love to work for, now might be  the time to connect with them. 5. Know your worth. One of the advantages of being in high demand is the opportunity to upgrade your compensation. Research the going rate for your job through  salary sources  online, surveys by your professional organization, and informal networking  with fellow professionals. Review these tips for  determining how much you’re worth. 6.  Do you want more money?  If you think you should be making more, consider  asking for a raise  or target other jobs that have higher compensation. Many employers will match an offer from another  organization. In some cases, a competing offer or changing jobs may be the only way to secure a substantial increase in pay. Be careful that you dont issue an ultimatum to your current employer if you arent ready to change jobs. You don’t want to lose the job you have before you’re ready to move on. 7. Get more skills. If the next job you’d love to have  requires skills or knowledge  that you dont fully possess, or you want to expand your current responsibilities into new areas, explore whether you can incorporate or build upon these skills in your position. Your employer may be more flexible than you think in modifying your job if you are a highly valued employee, and they dont want to lose you. Also, investigate  classes and training opportunities  to acquire the right background for your next job. Your employer might even agree to pay. 8. Help recruiters find you.  When there are worker shortages, employers become more proactive in recruiting  passive candidates. They will be more likely to utilize search firms to fish for candidates and mine prospects from LinkedIn. Consider  utilizing a recruiter  to help you find your  ideal job, but make sure that you dont let them redefine your goals to meet the supply of jobs that they are promoting. Develop a complete  LinkedIn profile, keep it up to date, and your next job might find you before you find it. 9.  It’s okay to say, “No thanks.” Dont be afraid to turn down a job offer that seems less than ideal. If you are in high demand, other offers will come your way. You might be better off staying in your current job until you find something very appealing. Excessive  job hopping  can be a red flag on a resume, even for workers in high demand. Here’s  how to turn down a job offer. 10. Tap your connections.  Reach out to contacts for information, advice, and suggestions about jobs. Share your profile for an ideal job and ask them to recommend positions within their sector. During worker shortages, companies often pay employees a bonus for candidate referrals; recommendations from current staff are usually given careful consideration under any circumstances.       How to Decide Which Job to Take It can actually be harder to make a decision when you have more jobs to choose from. You may have to  juggle multiple job offers, which can be stressful. Take the time to  evaluate each offer  and to carefully  compare employee benefit packages. It’s not all about the money â€" the benefits and perks you’re being offered are important too, and some  perks can be negotiated in a job offer. When you’re job hunting in a buyer’s market, you’re in the driver’s seat, and you can pick and choose between jobs to find the one that’s the best match. Don’t rush into a decision. Take the time to carefully consider all options. Forget about the ones you didn’t take once your decision is made; instead, focus on the future and  get ready to start your new job.

A Career-Change Guide for 21st Century Job-Hoppers

A Career-Change Guide for 21st Century Job-Hoppers A Career-Change Guide for 21st Century Job-Hoppers A Career-Change Guide for 21st Century Job-Hoppers These days, job-hopping is the norm. If you're always on the search for the next best thing, here's what you need to know. [TWEET] Ever hear the term job-hopper? It used to refer to an individual who roamed from job to job to job, seemingly for no reason but wanderlust or a higher paycheck. It implies a fickleness, disloyalty, and lack of direction/long-term commitment. Now it's the norm. And it's okay good, even. How? Well, for one, changing careers is expected, especially in today's economy. Even if you stay in the same field, the chances of you getting brand-new responsibilities relatively quickly are reasonable, considering how many job titles and roles are being created every year that didn't exist the year before. Physician assistant. Chief content officer. Medical biller and coder. Data scientist. Independently contracted (Uber) driver. Zumba instructor. Inside sales representative. App developer. Home health aide. Brand evangelist. Indeed, it may be a myth that job-hopping was ever outside the norm. Even in the old days, late-period baby boomers held an average of 11.7 jobs from age 18 to 48, according to BLS data. We may be changing jobs less frequently as we get older, but if we're anything like the boomers (who still averaged 2.4 jobs from age 40 to 48), we'll always have our eyes on the horizon. These days, people change not only jobs multiple times by the time they hit their thirties, but careers. Not your grandfather's workforce To begin to understand how to change careers successfully and why career changes are now fashionable, we should look to U.S. labor-market history. Stable manufacturing jobs once awaited high-school graduates with competitive middle-income pay, handsome benefits and a guaranteed pension. College degrees (in lower supply) automatically conferred white-collar status on graduates and went a lot further than today as a ticket to a high-paying, highly skilled job. Times have changed. Now, pensions are gone, all but the most skilled manual labor is outsourced, and you can't rely on loyalty from employers in the knowledge economy, though you can count on competition from a glut of young college degree-holders. At the same time, getting an online education or starting your own business is easier and cheaper than ever. Access to education, entrepreneurial tools and the Internet-enabled gig economy make the self-employed world much more realistic. Even if you still primarily work for somebody else, second incomes come in many varieties, and you can shape opportunities to your demand and lifestyle. Don't want to work today? A driver in the sharing economy makes her own schedule. Can't find the right job in the current market? Relax. Maybe your perfect job just doesn't exist yet, but will surface in a few years. Building bridges So, now that you've gotten over the stigma associated with changing careers, let's discuss the importance of keeping good relationships. If you're going to learn how to successfully change careers, you don't want to alienate people along the way. As bad as things might be with your current employer, put on a happy face and make nice with everybody. Think like a diplomat: You never know when you might need a personal recommendation for future work or to facilitate an introduction between your new employer and your old for mutual benefit. A burned bridge is even more wasteful in a professional world where LinkedIn keeps everybody at virtual arm's length. Personal branding Speaking of building bridges, maintaining your personal brand independent of a single company is essential to creating a self-directed career. Why do you want a self-directed career? Because if you don't direct yourself, who will? Your circumstances. Or people that don't have your best interests at heart will try to exploit you for their gain. You don't want to be a victim of fate, pulled by puppet strings with no agency. In order to avoid living a lie in your work life, you need to actively work to match your talents and personality to your occupation before navigating how to change careers. Your personal brand should represent these skills and project your attitude to the world. Whether you build popularity/influence on social media, through blogging-content creation-publishing, participating in a professional association, attending a recurring conference, or presenting on the lecture circuit, do whatever you can to cultivate and perpetuate a distinct identity. Articulate a summary of this identity and put it front and center on your resume or personal website. Make it part of your LinkedIn profile's headline, corporate bio, blog author profile or job title. As one of my smart college classmates told me when I later interviewed him professionally for his take on marketing, you want your byline to convey more than just the current company you work for. His reasoning was your time at any given employer may be limited, while the gifts you offer the world endure from job to job and therefore, deserve their own billing independent of your employer. (This was the theory behind the practical matter of referring to me on his blog as Paul Richlovsky, [job title] at Employer X vs. Paul Richlovsky, Employer X's [job title]. This grammatical difference is subtle, but important: You're putting the person first.) Loving what you do, doing what you love Doing what you love is paramount, so you should be changing careers if your current employer is not fulfilling your will and drive for purposeful work. Contrary to the notion of being a quitter or paycheck-seeker, changing jobs to put yourself in the best possible environment to thrive is not only desirable, it is noble. From teacher to marketer/writer (and back) For inspiration, take my own story. An English major one year out of college, I packed up and moved across the world to teach English in China. Teaching was a blast, though some of the required curricula of one my programs I was not best qualified to teach, such as English for business. In fact, teaching a business English class or two on marketing vs. selling and AIDA was the extent of my marketing background until 5 years later, I'm back in my hometown and find a new full-time job at a fast-growing 20-person digital marketing agency. 10 years later, here I am still serving the same company (now 150+ people) as a content strategist and editor. Though I no longer stand in front of a classroom of Chinese college students, I am still teaching and surrounded by college students (I mean, recent graduates) that continue to make me feel young. I am thrilled to have regular opportunities to learn and teach on the job. I educate clients, help my colleagues and try to keep myself informed in a rapidly changing marketing industry with monumental technological innovation and philosophical discussion on how to be excellent. Immersed daily in an atmosphere of growth, I couldn't imagine doing anything better. I wish the same for you. Ready to make changing careers simple? Hire a TopResume writer today!

6 toxic thoughts successful people quarantine

6 toxic thoughts successful people quarantine 6 toxic thoughts successful people quarantine Your self-talk (the thoughts you have about your feelings) can make or break your career. When you make a mistake, they either magnify the negativity or help you turn that misstep into something productive.Negative self-talk is unrealistic, unnecessary, and self-defeating. It sends you into a downward emotional spiral that is difficult to pull out of.All self-talk is driven by important beliefs that you hold about yourself. It plays an understated but powerful role in success because it can both spur you forward to achieve your goals and hold you back.“He who believes he can and he who believes he cannot are both correct.” -Henry FordTalentSmart  has tested the emotional intelligence (EQ) of more than a million people and found that 90% of top performers are high in EQ. These successful, high EQ individuals possess an important skill- the ability to recognize and control negative self-talk so that it doesn’t prevent them from reaching their full potential. These successful peopl e earn an average of $28,000 more annually than their low EQ peers, get promoted more often, and receive higher marks on performance evaluations. The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $1,300 to an annual salary. When it comes to self-talk, we’ve discovered some common thoughts that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to these thoughts, so that they don’t derail your career:Perfection equals successHuman beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failure, and end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish, instead of enjoying what you were able to achieve. My destiny is predeterminedFar too many people succumb to the highly irrational idea that they are destined to succeed or fail. Make no mistake about it, your destiny is in your own hands, and blaming multiple successes or failures on forces beyond yo ur control is nothing more than a cop out. Sometimes life will deal you difficult cards to play, and others times you’ll be holding aces. Your willingness to give your all in playing any hand you’re holding determines your ultimate success or failure in life.I “always” or “never” do thatThere isn’t anything in life that you always or never do. You may do something a lot or not do something enough, but framing your behavior in terms of “always” or “never” is a form of self-pity. It makes you believe that you have no control of yourself and will never change. Don’t succumb to it.I succeed when others approve of meRegardless of what people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain?you’re never as good or bad as they say you are. It’s impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, but you can take people’s opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from wit hin.My past equals my futureRepeated failures can erode your self-confidence and make it hard to believe you’ll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, these failures result from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isn’t easy. Just remember that success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you can’t allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed. My emotions equal my realityIf you’ve read  Emotional Intelligence 2.0, you know how to take an objective look at your feelings and separate fact from fiction. If not, you might want to read it. Otherwise, your emotions will continue to skew your sense of reality, making you vulnerable to the negative self-talk that can hold you back from achieving your full potential.Bringing it all togetherI hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, I’m reminded of their power and my desire to use them every day.Travis Bradberry  is the co-author of  Emotional Intelligence 2.0  and the cofounder of  TalentSmart. (Photos by Wendy Felton, ASME Strategic Communications) Nearly 90 engineering students from several colleges in the New York City area participated in a 24-hour hackathon hosted at the MakerSpace student design shop at New York University Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn, N.Y., earlier this month. The spirited event, ASME EFx NYU: MakerHack, was the first EFx event to be held in the United States. Launched last year, EFx events are smaller-scale versions of the ASME Engineering Festivals (E-Fests) that can be easily staged by local colleges and universities throughout the world. During the hackathon, which was held March 9 and 10 and sponsored by NYU and Siemens, 18 teams worked through the night developing unique solutions to a problem confronting the Brooklyn neighborhood dubbed Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (DUMBO). In the very near future, a mammoth, five-year $95 million construction project to restore the neighborhoods famed cobblestone streets and replace the infrastructure underneath will commence, subjecting the areas business owners, residents and tourists to obstructed streets, sidewalk closures and a range of other construction-related headaches. “DUMBO Powered by You,” which was the winning entry at the MakerHack event in Brooklyn earlier this month, employed kinetic energy from panels implanted in the sidewalk to power interactive displays intended to guide people through a construction zone to businesses. The teams taking part in the upbeat, all-night MakerHack were instructed to develop a prototype of a delivery system that would minimize the impact of the multi-year project by keeping tourists and residents informed regarding the progress of construction in the various DUMBO districts and by driving foot traffic to the neighborhoods local businesses. At the end of the EFx MakerHack, which was attended by ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile and a number of other ASME staff and volunteers, three teams were singled out for their innovative solutions to the challenges posed by the renovation in DUMBO. The competitions $3,500 top prize went to a five-member team of students from NYU for their entry, DUMBO Powered by You, which proposed that interactive displays powered by kinetic energy collected from panels embedded in the sidewalk could guide people through the construction scaffolding to shops that were open for business that day. A four-member team from NYU placed second in the competition and received $1,500 for their concept, Twitter Plant, which incorporated interactive art exhibits and an augmented reality smart phone app that would provide information about businesses that were open in the area, as well as artificial plants that would tweet passersby when they needed to be watered and hopefully encourage traffic to businesses within the construction zone. (Left to right) Chris Martin, director of operations and community development for the DUMBO BID, with members of the second-place team Rahul Ashleigh from NYU (foreground), and Rena Otake, John Tronolone and Karen Yehoshua of Cooper Union. Three NYU students and a student from New York City College of Technology (City Tech) took home the $500 third prize for their entry, DUMBO EZ Alerts, a comprehensive software solution for informing residents and tourists of DUMBO about the street closures, utility outages and other various changes scheduled to occur in their neighborhood. In addition to the cash prize, the winning team from NYU is currently in talks with members of the DUMBO Improvement District (BID) team, who proposed the challenge for the MakerHack competition, about the possible implementation of DUMBO Powered by You when the restoration project begins. All three teams also have the opportunity to submit their ideas to the city for further consideration. Brianna Miglaccio, the chair of the NYU Tandon student chapter who led the organization of the EFx MakerHack event with fellow student member Rosaura Ocampo, noted that the difference between the NYU hackathon and others she had attended in the past was that students were challenged to develop actual physical prototypes instead of software apps. You get to see something made, she continued. Its only been two hours, and I already saw someone create a pressure sensor that generates electricity. Thats very innovative stuff, and we just started. (Left to right) Members of the “DUMBO EZ Alerts” team Md Abedin of NYU, Diego Curatolo of City Tech, Enson Chen of NYU and Cesar Lema of NYU. The team placed third at the EFx event in Brooklyn. Diego Curatolo, a senior from City Tech and member of the DUMBO EZ Alerts team, was particularly enthusiastic about taking part in the event. I definitely think its a great opportunity for students to learn more about ASME and to get the chance to work with other students from other universities, said Curatolo, a senior in mechanical engineering. Ive actually gotten the opportunity to work with some of the NYU students, which isnt something that usually happens. So Im grateful for that. Chris Martin, director of operations and community development for the DUMBO BID, was also impressed with the EFx at NYU and its potential influence on the students who participated. I think the event was great, he said. Im excited to see what happens. I think students who are studying engineering can do a lot of really awesome things. I hope that this is something that helps them realize that the work that they can do can be impactful to their communities. Women no longer have to wear high heels to work in this big city

Women no longer have to wear high heels to work in this big city Women no longer have to wear high heels to work in this big city Women working in the Canadian province of British Columbia - which includes Vancouver - won’t be forced to wear heels at work any more.Government officials in the province, frequently just called “BC,”  announced that corporate rules requiring women to wear heels were “unsafe and discriminatory.” The province’s existing Workers Compensation Act has been amended to liberate women from the requirements to wear pinching, painful high-heeled pumps.Premier Christy Clark commented on the new policy: “In some workplaces in our province, women are required to wear high heels on the job. Like most British Columbians, our government thinks this is wrong. That is why we’re changing this regulation to stop this unsafe and discriminatory practice and adding an enforcement element by WorkSafeBC,” Clark said.BC already gives female employees protection against sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination as part of its  Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and parts of its Human Rights Code.High heels increase injuriesThe new rule on high-heeled shoes comes because they are, as it turns out, are too dangerous - literally. That’s why the new rules come as part of the province’s workers’ safety rules. Previously, a local official,  BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver, had filed a private member’s bill to achieve the same end, “designed to prevent employers from setting varying footwear and other requirements based on gender, gender expression or gender identity.” The new rules, however, won’t require a vote now as they would as a piece of legislation. And any woman who has worn heels can attest to how painful and dangerous they can be.“The requirement to wear high heels in some workplaces is a workplace health and safety issue. There is a risk of physical injury from slipping or falling, as well as possible damage to the feet, legs and back from prolonged wearing of high heels while at work,”  the statement said.WorkSafeBC will rep ortedly release a more thorough “workplace guideline”  by the end of this month. The new rule is a response to years of rumbling on the topic for a while now.Dress codes are updated for the futureThe move was expected, spurred by outrage over restaurants that required hostesses and other female employees to wear high heels, skirts, and other clothes designed to signal femininity.  Canadian restaurant franchise Earls Kitchen + Bar in Vancouver announced that it would let employees wear black pants instead of skirts on the same day that the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) called for an end to “sexualized workplace dress codes.”Premier Christy Clark also commented on the move to ban mandatory heels last month,  according to the BBC.Canada is not the only site of the revolution against heels.Last month, British lawmakers debated sexist workplace dress codes in Parliament after  former temp worker Nicola Thorp started a petition to overthrow sexist workplace dress codes. Th orp became an icon to many English women after she refused to accept her company’s rules requiring women to wear heels two to four inches high. She told to leave work in December 2015 because of her flat footwear. There was also  a “parliamentary investigation  into dress codes,”  including “a review of equality legislation in light of the high heel issue,” according to the Guardian.

This Email Trick Make Vacation Less Stressful - The Muse

This Email Trick Make Vacation Less Stressful - The Muse This Email Trick Make Vacation Less Stressful Going on vacation is hard work. You spend the week leading up to your time off working harder than ever to make sure everything is in order, tying up loose ends on projects, delegating or getting ahead on work that needs to be done when you’re away, and plowing through your inbox to make sure all lingering emails are responded to, all remaining questions are answered. And then, finally, the finish line is in sight. It’s 15 minutes until you sign off, your to-dos are checked off, your inbox is empty, and you’re just about to set up your out-of-office message and let out a huge sigh of relief when, gasp, another email comes in. The message is important, though not necessarily urgent, and will require more than a quick response. The problem is, it’s from someone who either doesn’t know or likely forgot that you’re going on vacation- and since they didn’t receive your out-of-office, they’ll probably think you’re rude for not responding in over a week. Whether it’s one email in the last 15 minutes that you don’t have time (or mental energy) to answer or 30 that come in during the last day before you leave, this last-minute burst of added work before you finally get a break is the worst feeling. But luckily, there is a very easy solution. Simply turn on your out-of-office message a day before you leave. That’s right, turn it on early. It’s so easy to do, and it means that anyone sending you emails during your last day at work will have the expectation that you might not get back to them until after your vacation, making them less likely to be frustrated by your lack of response. This then gives you the power to decide which of those people actually urgently need your attention before you head out, and which can wait until later. If you use this trick, you should keep a few things in mind. First of all, it’s probably worth letting your boss, your direct reports, or others you work closely with know that you’re going to be doing this, so they aren’t confused or panicked that you’ve left earlier than you said. If you work at an especially large organization where it isn’t feasible to let everyone know, you could even set up a special message for your last day at work that you then switch to your normal message at the end of the day. Something like: Hi there, As you may or may not already know, I’m leaving at the end of today to go on vacation in [location]. I have a lot of work to wrap up before I head out, so may not be able to respond to all the emails that come in today. I will do my best to get to all urgent messages before the end of the day, otherwise, rest assured, I will respond when I return on [date you return]. [Your Name] Either way, block out some time toward the end of your last day to peek through the messages that have come in, answering anything that only requires a quick response or that urgently needs your attention before you go and knowing that the others truly can wait until you come back relaxed and ready to get back to work. Uber CEO encouraging workers to say have the D causing a stir

Uber CEO encouraging workers to say 'have the D' causing a stir Uber CEO encouraging workers to say 'have the D' causing a stir When you speak in the unnatural language of spreadsheets and business how-to guides, you may end up saying something that you never intended to mean. Take Uber CEO  Dara Khosrowshahi’s faux pas as a cautionary tale. According to a May 15 memo that Business Insider obtained, Khosrowshahi encouraged his employees to say they “have the D” to establish their authority, appearing to not realize the phrase’s sexual connotations.close dialog Advertisementclose dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012257 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close { z-index: 2;}@-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -ms-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -ms-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -moz-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -moz-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { transform: rotate(0deg); } to { transform: rotate(360deg); } } #bx-close-inside-1012257 { top: 0; right: 0; } /* KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper { padding-top: 0!important; height: 100%;}.bx-custom#bx-campaign-1012257 #bx-creative-1012257 .bx-wrap { height: auto;}/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper video { position: static;}/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *:first-child {width: 100%;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative {background-color : transparent;border-style: none;max-width: 900px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close {stroke: white;background-color: black;border-style: solid;border-color: white;border-width: 1px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-group-1012257-AFvXBOB {padding: 10px;display: block;width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-J0EiS8Y {width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-J0EiS8Y *:first-child {padding: 2px 4px;font-size: 10px;color: rgb(255, 255, 255);text-transform: uppercase;background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34);}The new instruction was originally meant as a way to help Uber employees recognize decision makers in meetings, clearing up bottlenecks that prevent ideas from going forward.“While our scale and scope are unrivaled, they come at a potential cost: increased bureaucracy, slower decision making, less accountability, and too many people in too many meetings where it’s unclear who the decision makers are,” K hosrowshahi wrote in the memo.Khosrowshahi said that henceforth, he was going to use a phrase to clarify decision roles in meetings.“You may hear me say in meetings  â€˜[insert name] has the D here.’  This is about being clear on who is the decision maker; I’d encourage you to do the same,” Khosrowshahi wrote.Having the “D” has multiple meaningsKhosrowshahi appeared to be drawing from a management technique taught by a 2006 Harvard Business Review article titled “Who Has the D?:  How Clear Decision Roles Enhance Organizational Performance.” The article was written by partners at Bain Company who also consulted for Uber, according to the memo. It instructs business leaders to “locate the D.” Once you “have the D,” you are advised to use it wisely.“To be strong and effective, the person with the D needs good business judgment, a grasp of the relevant trade-offs, a bias for action, and a keen awareness of the organization that will execute the decision,” th e article states. But for younger employees who grew up on hip-hop, “the D” has a much different meaning. Since the early aughts, “the D” has gained a sexual connotation following the release of the 2004 single “So Sexy” by U.S. rapper Twista. Google Trends reports that the phrase “getting the D” spiked in use in June 2004 and has since steadily gained popularity as slang.Uber said that its CEO was unfamiliar with the sexual meaning the phrase had.“As you may have read,  Uber is now run by your dad - so, no, that interpretation was lost on him,” Uber said in a statement.Visionaries everywhere, take heed. Before you introduce a new phrase into the lexicon of your company, run a fact check to make sure it has not gained a second life as slang for genitalia.
